Domus Carità Politica, as any other major event, has a story. A story, which, briefly goes through different stages of the great project, dictated by the desire to make people more community-minded.

The House in the Wall

It was the year 1989, and the Berlin Wall was still standing, when Mr. Alfredo Luciani came up with the idea of creating a meeting place, above nationalities, religions, political creed, a place for all men full of good will. He imagined the Berlin Wall no longer as a sign of division between peoples, but as a setting where to build a better future. He wrote, then, a kind of message-proposal for fulfilling a multi-purpose building in Berlin.

The Contribution of Architect Aldo Rossi

Aldo Rossi, one of the big names in world architecture and unfortunately passed away too early, was asked to formulate the first design hypothesis. The design consisted of five main sections: refreshment, management, creativity, faith, politics. In short, a moral centre open to anyone who believes in peace, in brotherhood and in the need for a common home and in the meantime a place for ideas, debates, meetings, artistic and cultural initiatives. The idea spread far and wide thanks to the architect's distinguished personality. In the weekly magazine "Espresso" of November 1989, a first drawing of the "Common House" was published and the opinion piece reported, among other things: "Mr. Luciani asked Aldo Rossi to sign the great project. The architect immediately and enthusiastically accepted the idea...designing environments with different functions of meeting and sharing".

International Weeks of Social Teaching

On the eve of the centenary of the encyclical "Rerum Novarum" the First International Week of the Social Teaching of the Church on the theme Rerum Novarum and today's social problems was organized in Rieti from 16 to 18 November 1990. The meeting was above all an experience of reflection and a sign of a commitment to the second reading of "Rerum Novarum" in the historical-cultural context, but also in view of our times. Accredited Ambassadors to the Holy See took attended the meeting. Thus, the preparation of those who will be regular guests of the Domus Carità Politica began.
