CARITÀ POLITICA WEDNESDAY

  • January 26 Wednesday 5 p.m.
    Modernity, Postmodernity and Ethical Perspectives
Emo e Rmo Card. Paul Poupard, President of the Pontifical Council of Culture
H.E. Mr. Abdelouhab Maalmi , Ambassador of Morocco to the Holy See

The meeting between tradition and modernity is one of the most difficult challenges of our time. This dialogue between old and new will largely shape the future of the younger generations. It deals with a dialogue that calls for a greater reflection, an in-depth analysis and a wise balance, since the stakes are high. On one hand, there may be the temptation to seek refuge in forms of nostalgia closed to what is positive in the contemporary world; on the other hand, nowadays there is a strong desire to prefer syncretism and the absence of a kind of modernity in an uncritical way. These discussions are meant to be a multiform phenomenon of the cultural life of the Diplomatic Corps to the Holy See. They follow the shift from reflection on the role of being Ambassadors to the Holy See, to the desire to cooperate in the building of a fairer and more supportive world.

The Church has great respect and preference for the employment world, which is by right part of the Church, but because of atheistic forces and unpleasant events has been separated from the Church, creating an absurd and unnatural divide.

The aim is to prepare a saddlebag, a baggage not only for believers but also for people in good will in their adventure marked by the problems of 2000 in the economic, financial, political, social and cultural fields. Through the comparison of social practice in the great religions, the aim is to tend towards "principles of reflection", "criteria of judgement" and "directives of action" which will allow today's people to interpret events in the same way and to provide themselves with common rules of moral conduct.

  • December 13 Wednesday 5 p.m.
    Et in Roma ego
Testimonies of personalities to say to those who will come after us: et in Roma ego, in this great jubilee. Pages full of notes, curiosities, reflections, not secondary pieces of the history of an extraordinary event.

Let us look beyond.

If one is right in recalling a specific moral duty in the exercise of modern technology, freeing it from totalitarian bait, one is wrong in completely rejecting utopia. It is not only bait that hides real difficulties and risks or even moral problems. To quote Tommaso Moro: there is also a political utopia, a necessary hope.

We walk attracted by light.

Writers, artists, politicians and diplomats "tell" the Rome of 2000: religiosity, culture, events, characters.
